Chapter Thirteen

The Séance

Time really began to drag, as I was in a hurry to get Addy off the island. It’s obvious that Gran would be pleased and relieved to see the back of this particular girl. Unfortunately, the gang seemed excited about Addy’s idea to hold a seance. Well, only those who knew about it. Man, how do you tell people to just clear off, without causing a fight?

In disgust, I walked back to the house with the near jungle heat and humidity gnawing at my every nerve. At least indoors we had comfort and coolness. Alic sat in the sitting room doing nothing in particular. She had been watching me through the window.

‘Hi,’ I said and walked into the room.

‘Oh, Bill. I thought you were going to get rid of that girl.’

‘Sure. She’s leaving tonight. Don’t worry. I don’t like her, I never really did and Gran wants her off the island, like ASAP.’

‘Come, sit with me, Bill.’

I walked over and eased myself down onto the love seat. She took my hands and looked into my eyes expectantly.

‘What is it, Alic? What’s wrong?’

‘I have to go home, Bill. I’ll go mad if I stay here any longer. Please help me. I must get out of here.’

I sighed and said, ‘Sweetie, I would take you myself, but the cops say we have to stay. Would you rather stay in a hotel on the mainland?’

Her grip tightened. ‘No, I don’t want to be alone. Please, you won’t leave me, will you?’

‘No. I’ll be here for you. I tell you what, the minute the inquest’s over I’ll hire a plane and fly you to Hamilton. How’s that sound?’

She smiled weakly. ‘Oh God! My nerves are shot. I keep seeing Pete just lying there and all that blood. I’ll never get over it, Bill.’

‘It was an accident, Alic. Try to put it out of your mind. Relax - take deep breaths. We’ll be going to the funeral when the cops give the go- ahead, maybe that’ll put an end to it.’

She put her arms around me and hugged me. ‘I do need you, Bill. Please don’t leave me, not for a second.’

‘No problem, Alic. They’re going to have a sort of party tonight, after dark, and then Addy’s going to leave on her boat, never again to return. Is that okay?’

‘You won’t let her in this house will you, Bill?’

‘No, Gran would eat my shorts with me in them if I did. Believe me - we’ll all be happier when she’s off this island.’

‘I don’t want any of that gold, Bill, even if you do find it. I think it’s haunted. Fiend guards his treasure from beyond the grave. I can feel him just about everywhere.’

I wanted to laugh but didn’t, because it’s not nice to laugh at someone as worried and scared as she was. ‘Don’t worry, Alic. We’re all safe in this house. Nothing will harm us here, not even Fiend himself.’

‘What if the power should fail?’

‘It won’t. Even if it does, we’ve got emergency lighting.
